Do cake stands keep cakes fresh?

Although a cake tastes best when served fresh, it can often be difficult to eat a whole cake within a day or so of preparation. Cake stands are particularly useful here as they help keep cakes fresh for longer by regulating humidity, and also allow you to store favorite tea and coffee cups or saucers with the cake, as well as decorations that might not necessarily be edible.

How big should cake stand be?

The size of a cake stand depends on the size of the cake you will be serving. A stand should be large enough to hold the bottom tier, as well as a piece of cardboard that is slightly larger than the bottom tier. Slightly larger is better, but a stand should never be smaller than these two items.

How do you move a cake without breaking it?

Cake is typically brought out on a cake board, serving as both protection and base. Before you move a cake, slip heavy nylon or metal spatulas under opposite sides of the cake board, away from the exposed portion of the cake. Gently slide them along the top of the board until it's secure in your hand, then transfer to the platter.
