What is the difference between platter and tray?

A tray is a flat, typically rectangular or round, rigid object upon which things are carried and typically used for serving food. A platter is a tray for serving foods. Platter derives from the Old French word platiere, meaning "plank". Plaiter can mean "one who plats/plaits or braids."

Can a platter be round?

Rectangular platters are most commonly used, though oval, round and square shapes are also available. Plastic, metal, glass and ceramic trays are the most common materials used to make platters. A platter is a great fitting gift for newlyweds, housewarmings and even corporate parties.
