Historical Legacy of Morgan & Peace Dollars

Morgan Silver Dollar

Introduced in 1878 and minted until 1904, with a final run in 1921, the Morgan dollar symbolizes America’s rapid industrial and economic growth. It was created by George T. Morgan (1845–1925), who served as the U.S. Mint’s Chief Engraver.

Peace Silver Dollar

First issued in 1921 following World War I, the Peace dollar represents a hopeful new era of peace. It was designed by Anthony de Francisci (1887–1964), an Italian-American sculptor, and was minted until 1928, returning briefly in 1934 and 1935.

The 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act

In 2020, Congress passed Public Law 116-286, also known as the 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act, mandating commemorative issues for the centennial of these coins.

  • In 2021, five Morgan dollars were released:
    • “CC” privy mark (Carson City Mint)
    • “O” privy mark (New Orleans Mint)
    • No privy mark (Philadelphia Mint)
    • “S” mintmark (San Francisco Mint)
    • “D” mintmark (Denver Mint)
  • A Peace dollar was also struck at the Philadelphia Mint without a mintmark.

Due to a shortage of silver blanks, no coins were issued in 2022. The series resumed in 2023 and has continued annually since, featuring both San Francisco (S) and Philadelphia (P) issues.
